Unlock the full potential of your indoor mobile and terrestrial scans with Cintoo Cloud
In the 3D laser scanning world, a new generation of indoor mobile scanners – which include handheld and backpack scanners – provide a quick and easy way to complete the scanning of target sites and are now considered as an alternative solution to terrestrial scanners. 3D mobile laser (or Lidar) scanning has gained wide acceptance in AEC and Digital Twin applications due to its ease of capture and reduced time to scan. Improved SLAM (Simultaneous Localization and Mapping) algorithms now process the data coming from these mobile scanners and generate point cloud data that can compete with point clouds from static scanners when millimeter accuracy is not required. Mobile devices are used to append static scans for areas that cannot be reached with a static scanner or to update static scans with more frequent reality capture data. But such point clouds come ‘unstructured’, which means unlike tripod based scanners each 3D point is not related to a given origin.
Despite the advantages of mobile scanning these unstructured point clouds face the following challenges:
- Navigating and understanding unstructured point clouds is not an easy task and requires professional expertise and specialized software.
- Using indoor mobile scanning devices are often part of a multimodal capture process that includes using terrestrial scans as well. Getting a consistent navigation experience and the same analysis capability for static and mobile scans Is difficult for users with little or no surveying experience.
Providing a unique user experience for static and mobile scans from a single source of reality data is a much-needed capability to democratize this new type of as-built information for its broad usage in BIM and Digital Twin workflows.
For those using the NavVis VLX or M6, Viametris BSM3D, GeoSLAM Zeb Series, Gexcel Heron devices Emesent Hovermap or the Leica BLK2GO for indoor mobile 3D scans, Cintoo now offers a unified SaaS solution to easily convert and upload these scans to the cloud as if the data had been captured by a static scanner.
Cintoo Cloud’s hardware-agnostic and multimodal platform will restructure your unstructured point clouds. This new and unique Cintoo technology, included in Cintoo Connect 2.0, will generate virtual 3D scans along the scanning path by sampling the path and placing a scan at user-defined spacing, such as every five or six meters for example. Cintoo Connect 2.0 then creates a compressed multi-resolution mesh for each 3D scan position, just like for structured point clouds coming from static laser scans, considering only the visible points from each position. In this process, panoramic images are also created from the raw point cloud data if no photos have been captured by the device.
The result is that your unstructured mobile scan data now exactly looks like static scan data, which can be easily uploaded to Cintoo Cloud and shared, viewed, measured, annotated, or compared to a BIM or a CAD model using Cintoo’s unique high-resolution mesh streaming technology. Your mobile scans can now be used for your BIM and Digital Twin workflows and for coordination with team members and contractors, anywhere at any time, using a simple web browser.
The primary advantages of the new Cintoo Connect 2.0 are:
- It keeps the precision of the original unstructured point cloud, so there Is no compromise on accuracy.
- It generates a panoramic image for each newly created 3D scan position, using either the source panoramas from the device or the point colors if no 360-image is available.
- It makes your scan data much easier to navigate using the scan-to-scan navigation in a simple web browser.
- It also makes your scan data much easier to interpret using Cintoo Cloud’s acclaimed mesh-streaming and viewing technology.
- It allows you to easily merge various data types in a single mesh-based viewing experience.
- You can now have unstructured data turned into structured data that can be exported in E57 or RCP format with the panoramic images included which can be used in any viewing or modeling application.
“Cintoo Connect 2.0 is a major step towards our democratization objectives for 3D laser scanning and its massive adoption by experts and non-experts alike in our core BIM, Construction, Manufacturing, Automobile, Energy or Oil & Gas industries,” stated Dominique Pouliquen, CEO.
“Cintoo Cloud’s acclaimed mesh-based streaming technology has already gained massive adoption in every company using it, increasing from 10 to 50 times more reality data created and used as compared to traditional point cloud viewing. Indoor Mobile Scanner users can now benefit from the same opportunities with this new release.”
The ever-expanding use of mobile data capture due to its inherent advantages now calls for an easy to use and cost-effective solution to optimize the use of this scanned data. With Cintoo Cloud and its new Cintoo Connect 2.0 you can achieve all the benefits of a structured static scan while also taking advantage of all that indoor mobile scans have to offer.
