How Tietoa Prioritizes Precision with the Help of Cintoo

Tietoa is the leading design support company for BIM modeling, construction projects, and renovations in Finland. Operating out of Helsinki, Tietoa is prioritizing precision to support BIM modelling and construction renovations on major existing buildings such as public schools, hospitals, city centers, apartment buildings and more. By prioritizing precision, Tietoa is able to effectively speed up their client’s design and build projects without compromising on scalability or accuracy. Tietoa’s team of construction professionals use applied reality, building information modelling and visualization services for large construction projects, helping clients with BIM design, coordination, 3D visualization, laser scanning, inventory modeling, applied reality, and digital construction.

For large-scale, complex projects, Tietoa coordinates aspects on Cintoo to ensure enhanced scan data visualization, collaboration, and 3D navigation for experts and non-experts alike.

Since Tietoa is agnostic, Cintoo provides a solution that matches their agnostic approach, making for a seamless partnership. Different hardware and software offerings can be streamed into Cintoo, at the most precise accuracy, for better coordination and visualization of scan data.

Jaako Hauru, Head of Unit for Applied Reality & BIM at Tietoa, says that “We want to support the client in any possible way. In Cintoo, people can see their data and have a better understanding of the conditions whether they’re technical or not.”

Hauru’s team first helps clients with their scanning and scaling, ensuring effective and accurate scan-to-BIM modelling based on as-built conditions.

In the last year, Cintoo was used for 204 coordinated projects that Tietoa helped their clients with, including everything from scanning and initial BIM modelling to gaging and responding to issues in phases of demolitions, construction, and renovations.

Having Cintoo as the all-in-one platform for their data visualization makes it easy to transfer and convert huge point cloud data sets into meshes. “In the past, it was physical hard drives housing point cloud data that we would have to carry around with us,” Hauru says. Now, 3D data is more democratized than ever before, meaning anyone involved in the project life cycle can easily access and navigate through the 3D data. Cintoo’s TurboMesh technology instantly converts large, cumbersome scan data sets into meshes for easier moving around and understanding of environments. Everyone has access to the same environment, and this creates a shared workflow that prioritizes accuracy and eliminates misinterpretation. Any problem is identified by Tietoa before it occurs, and the scale of innovation is not only faster but also creates the conditions for new possibilities in BIM modeling, digital construction and 3D navigation.

Comprehensive pipework adjusted by the Tietoa team based on modelling.

Tietoa works extensively with the City of Helsinki to guide construction and renovation projects, particularly of schools. Working within a framework agreement with Helsinki, Tietoa is able to expand their services with the use of reality capture and applied BIM solutions.

The first operational phase of the project is the data capture aspect. “By serving our customer in this initial phase, we are naturally involved from the beginning of the project. This provides an opportunity to offer subsequent phases for each project, such as draft BIM modeling, BIM coordination, and visualization,” says Tomas Westerholm, Digital Director at Tietoa. This means that Tietoa is able to expand their services to offer precise visualization of all development stages.

Integrated in these aspects is how Cintoo allows the Tietoa team to communicate meaningful aspects of a project in a digital sense. From the initial phase of the project, Tietoa can communicate their processes by showing stakeholders in a virtual environment the proposals of the design and build elements. “When the customer notifies us of a new project, we create a new Cintoo project and deliver a service offer for this new project. The customer approves the offer after seeing it in Cintoo and we can create an invoice from the API interface.”

Cintoo’s partnership with Tietoa is ongoing and constantly innovating to provide new solution offerings that will help Tietoa advance their own work. “Through collaboration, we have already received new useful features as part of the latest API interface version,” says Westerholm.
